Day 1: Local Charm and First Impressions
What We Did:
After a smooth airport bus ride (€5, payable by card) and a short 15-minute walk through bustling Syntagma Square, we arrived at the Economy Hotel. It’s a budget-friendly gem with a prime location, small but functional rooms, and friendly staff. After settling in, we ventured to the nearby Central Municipal Athens Market (Varvakios Agora), where vibrant stalls and enticing aromas filled the air. I enjoyed my first Greek meal at one of the market’s eateries, soaking in the authentic atmosphere.
Later, we explored Monastiraki, a lively district with unique shops and a buzzing flea market, before wandering through the charming streets of Plaka. This historic neighborhood, with its cobblestone alleys and fairy-lit restaurants, was the perfect spot to wind down.
Recommendations:
Explore Varvakios Market for an authentic taste of Athens’ food culture.
Plaka’s cozy ambiance of cute restaurants and shops is most magical in the evenings—don’t rush your visit!
Day 2: A Breathtaking Journey to Meteora
What We Did:
The highlight of my trip was a day trip to Meteora, a surreal landscape of towering rock formations crowned with monasteries. The unexpected 4-hour journey each way was longer than expected, but beautiful and well worth it. I climbed 260 steps to one monastery, rewarded with stunning views and peaceful interiors. Another monastery we visited was more accessible, offering equally breathtaking vistas.
Our local guide shared fascinating stories about the monks who once lived in the caves in the rock formations, using ladders and buckets to haul supplies from the community and holding mass etc from the platforms when she was growing up. It was amazing to hear how it had been not so long ago and how some monasteries were still used now.
For a little extra on the tour you could get lunch included, where we enjoyed a delicious homemade meal of fresh salad and main course ranging from chicken and lamb to delicious vegetarian options as well of stuffed vegetables, the perfect way to refuel before doing the climb up the monastery!
Recommendations:
If you can, stay overnight in Meteora to explore other places nearby given the distance travelling, however if not, still worth it for a day trip.
A guided tour is a must to learn about the site’s unique history. I found it easy to book with getyourguide and find the tour with the closest starting point. We left pretty much on time leaving just after 5 minutes after waiting for a few no-shows. The tour group size was about 30 which felt ok.

Day 3: Ancient Marvels and Coastal Escapes
What we did:
We started the day with a hop-on-hop-off bus tour, changing bus neear the Acropolis and using the central and special Riviera line to explore the Athenian coastline. This route only runs a few times daily, so checking the schedule is essential. Th stop at Lake Vouliagmeni was a highlight. This stunning natural lake, known for its warm, therapeutic waters, is worth visiting even if you only admire it from above the wall. I also explored the nearby small beaches with crystal clear turquoise waters, which offered a peaceful escape.
Then we tried walking back a stop to enjoy a coastal walk but as some beaches are private, the walk wasn”t so coastal and recommend to rather just spend a few hours around the lake spot and/or the beach there or having lunch in one of the lovely seaview restaurants!
In the evening, we found a rooftop restaurant adorned with fairy lights. Seated at a cozy corner table with a heater keeping the March chill at bay, I enjoyed a warm and magical dinner overlooking the illuminated Acropolis.
Recommendations:
Leave a few hours to enjoy Lake Vouliagmeni or the beaches. Entry is charged, but the unique waters are worth it.
Rooftop dining with Acropolis views is a must—book ahead for the best seats!
Day 4: Farewell to Athens
What We Did:
On my last day, we took advantage of free entry to the Acropolis as it was the first day of the month, starting early at 8:30 a.m. to explore this iconic site before the crowds arrived. By 10:30 a.m., it was bustling, so an early start is highly recommended.
Next, I headed to Syntagma Square for the Changing of the Guards. Arriving by 10:45 a.m. ensured a good view of the grand Sunday procession. The ceremonial uniforms and synchronized movements were mesmerizing.
In the afternoon we did the city route of hop on and hop off bus, and shopped for souvenirs, picking up spices, olives, and local goodies. Before having lunch at a lovely restaurant with a nice terrace and different view of the Acropoise. Finally, I caught the airport bus (€5), an easy and affordable way to end my trip.
Recommendations:
Plan your Acropolis visit for early morning or late afternoon to avoid peak crowds.
On Sundays, the Changing of the Guards is a unique cultural experience not to be missed.
